Bakery to continue midnight trade

5/05/2008 8:08:22 AM
CBD bakery Brumby’s will continue late night trading on weekends despite police opposition.

Brumby’s, on the corner of Beardy and Dangar streets, will trade from midnight to 3 o’clock on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Approval from Armidale Dumaresq Council is conditional on Brumby’s providing licensed security personnel during those hours.

At least one security person must be on the premises at all times, ‘to assist in the management of patron conduct and to protect staff from anti-social behaviour’.

The bakery has been trading from midnight-3am on a trial basis for six months with approval from police and council.

But police would not agree to extend the arrangement in relation to the provision of security personnel.

Brumby’s then sought modification of the consent to require only council’s agreement.

Police had submitted a crime risk assessment which raised a number of concerns, including general levels of crime in the vicinity of the Beardy/Dangar intersection and poor lighting.

Information provided by Brumby’s indicated there had been no instances of crime within the premises during late night trading.

On the contrary, they said, the presence of security staff was encouraging people waiting for transport to do so at the shop.

When the trading hours were approved at Monday night’s council meeting, Mayor Peter Ducat asked that his vote against the proposal be recorded.
