Merimbula’s Lakeview Hotel has shown it means business when it comes to taking a tough stance on antisocial behaviour.

At the weekend, the hotel issued two lifetime bans and nine 12 month bans to people involved in fights.

Police and hotel security staff were kept busy on Saturday night and into the early hours of Sunday morning with a number of fights breaking out in the carpark of the Hotel.

Owners and management at the Lakeview Hotel say they are going to come down hard on people who ruin a good night out for the rest of the community.

“Our policy in the past has included two, three, six and 12 month bans but over the last couple of years we have decided that these bans are not a sufficient enough deterrent for some people,” said owner Dennis Souter.

Mr Souter said they will now be issuing a minimum of 12 month to life bans for people who misbehave within the club, outside or on their way home.

“This hotel is part of the community and we do provide a service to the community,” he said.

Joint owner Peter Toscan said it is an unfortunate situation but it needs to be done.

“From now on we will have no hesitation if anyone steps out of line to issue them with a ban.”

Owners and management of the club said they were also very disappointed that a number of the offenders issued with bans are from a Merimbula football team and said they would be discontinuing sponsorship of that team as a result.

“It is the hotel policy to provide a safe, comfortable and happy atmosphere for the youth of the town to enjoy a good night out and those people who have been upsetting that will no longer be welcome,” said Mr Souter.

Mr Souter also said under the Bega Valley Shire Liquor Accord and the provisions of the new liquor act, serious offenders can be banned from multiple bars no matter where they offend.

“The accord has the power to agree to the banning of individuals from all local premises within the shire including bottle shops, restaurants, pubs and hotels,” he said.

Lakeview staff are also concerned about the number of underage people hanging around outside the hotel on a Saturday night.

“Secondary supply is a huge problem in this town and I just wonder whether parents know where their underage children are at night,” said Mr Souter.

Mr Toscan also said that hotel management was just as concerned as police.

“We have a responsibility to the community and we have a business to run.

“This is a great venue and it should not be disrespected. There will be zero tolerance from now on.”

It is going to cost people if they step out of line.

Anyone who is drunk, disorderly or violent at a pub or club will be asked to leave, if you do not leave when asked you are committing a crime and can be issued with an on the spot fine of $550.
